Omega-3 for memory

Tested in thousands of older people. No difference.

Brain-health drinks and capsules lean on omega-3 fish oil. Short answer: a Cochrane review of three placebo trials, and a three-year trial in 1,680 people over 70 with memory complaints, found no difference in memory or thinking. Fish oil is generally well tolerated. Exercise, blood-pressure control and hearing care are where to start; a doctor can check memory worries.

What the research shows

Grades are calculated from the studies listed, by fixed rules.

  • Omega-3 (fish oil) supplements slow memory decline as you ageTested — no effect found

A Cochrane review of three high-quality placebo trials, and a three-year trial in 1,680 older people with memory complaints, found no difference in memory or thinking on omega-3. Fish oil is generally well tolerated; mild stomach upset was the main side effect.

We found no study of Uno Protect. Its largest ingredients by weight are fish-oil omega-3s (871 mg), green tea extract, a herring-roe phospholipid, quercetin, turmeric and red ginseng, plus vitamin D and K2. The omega-3 trials above found no slowing of decline; the rest are not graded here. A drink called “proven” is not proven because its ingredients were each studied somewhere.
