Mushroom supplements, graded

Cordyceps did nothing for exercise or focus in blinded trials. One blend helped stress.

Short answer: the “fruiting body, not mycelium on grain” point has some chemistry behind it — grain-grown products can be mostly starch. But what matters is whether any of it does something in people, and there the record is thin: a month of cordyceps and reishi changed neither exercise capacity nor thinking in 96 people, while one branded blend helped stress and sleep in a single trial. Mushroom coffees and adaptogen meals have no trials of their own; the energy in a cacao-and-tea blend is mostly caffeine.

Lion’s mane and reishi on their own are graded on our functional spirits page.

What the research shows

Grades are calculated from the studies listed, by fixed rules.

Before you buy

  • Look for the species, the part used (fruiting body or mycelium) and the amount on the label. “Mushroom blend” with no amounts tells you nothing.
  • If a product is grown on grain, ask whether it reports beta-glucan and starch separately.
  • Count the caffeine in mushroom “coffees” the way you would any coffee.

Your next step

  • If you try itIf you try a blend for stress, look for one with a published trialThe one blend with a double-blind trial helped anxiety, fatigue and sleep over 12 weeks. A different blend is a different product.
  • What has evidence insteadFor energy and focus: sleep, then caffeine you can measureCordyceps did nothing for exercise or focus in blinded trials. Mushroom coffees’ lift comes mostly from the caffeine in their tea and cacao.
