Dose for Your Liver: does the shot work?

It has a real trial. Here is what it measured, and who ran it.

Dose for Your Liver is a 2 oz daily shot of turmeric, dandelion, milk thistle and ginger. Short answer: unlike most products we check, it has a published, registered, double-blind trial: 130 healthy adults for six months, with all four standard liver enzymes improving more than on placebo. Two things to weigh: the company funded it and took part in designing, analysing and writing it; and in healthy people these enzymes are a marker, not a disease outcome.

One six-month double-blind trial of 130 healthy adults found all four standard liver enzymes improved more than with placebo. The company paid for it and helped design, analyse and write it. In healthy people these enzymes are usually already normal, so this is a change in a marker, not proof of a healthier liver. Rare cases of liver injury have been linked to turmeric supplements.

Before you buy

  • If a blood test has shown raised liver enzymes, see a doctor about why — alcohol, weight and medicines are common causes.
  • Rare cases of liver injury have been linked to turmeric supplements; stop and get checked if you notice yellowing skin or dark urine.
